Back story
I’m starting this blog as both a diary for myself and also a possible resource for others. When I found out that I have a fruit intolerance, along with a potato-grain intolerance, I immediately turned to the internet for help. To no avail. I found either fructose intolerance, that said I could still eat sugar, berries, honey... or I just found recipes for fruit desserts. Not exactly helpful. This will be a steep learning curve, I’m afraid. I know nothing yet and I am realizing how dependent my “healthy diet” has been on fruit: coconut products, citrus, etc etc. A little background on how I got to this diagnosis.
I have tried lots of different diets. Vegan for two years, gluten free on and off, even whole30. The 30 day program is what actually got me looking for help. My brain fog disappeared but stomach, skin issues appeared and my geographic tongue got severe enough to want to stop eating. Plus my boys all showed signs of MTHFR issues and so I went for testing. My experience did not match up with my test results and I was extremely frustrated for wasting time and money and pretty much gave up. But nerve pain reduced greatly by being gluten free (and we are mostly dairy free, minus butter and occasional cheese). Then this past January, odd symptoms of numbness and itching in my toes surfaced. No answers. I asked in a Facebook group and a health practitioner spoke up and gave me her contact info. After finally being brave enough to stab my own finger, I sent in my lab and just got my results back a few days ago.
When it was fruit, I initially thought, “great. Another wasted effort.” But as I read and listened, dots began to connect. I was chugging elderberry syrup, vitamin C, apple cider vinegar and lemon water, along with magnesium citrate in January when we were all sick. All fruit. During the whole30, I ate too much fruit because I’m a busy homeschooling mom and failed to plan properly. So lots of raw fruit and Lara bars, all fruit. My protein shake in the mornings has fruit. Coconut everything. And when she told me about the additive citric acid in commercial flours, the occasional gluten issues made sense.
My next feeling was relief. Answers after years of experimenting and waffling between diet philosophies were nice. I posted the new restrictions to the fridge and felt like I could do this. But then the next day hit...
